9-28 Class

Today we corrected your sample IOWA's together. Then you had some time to look over the test booklet and reread the questions you got wrong. Finally we discussed some of the problems you had with the test and discussed solutions that you might use next week on the real IOWA test.

Homework:
Tonight, write a half page to a one page response to the following questions:
  1. How did you do on the IOWA test?
  2. What sections did you do well on? Why do you think you were successful with these sections?
  3. What sections do you need to work on? What solutions are you going to use to solve your test taking issues?

Make sure your response is written in an organized fashion. You must use complete paragraphs and sentences. Edit your work for mistakes. This may be handwritten if your writing is legible.

Since we did not have enough time today, I will return your first test tomorrow.

A brief outlook for 9/26, 9/27, and 9/28 Class

Today we took a sample portion of the IOWA test. Tomorrow we will do the same. You will have no homework tonight or tomorrow night.

We will take Thursday to analyze how you did on a sample portion of the IOWA to make sure you understand how questions are being asked and see where your strengths and weaknesses are and how we can make test anxiety easier for you!

Thursday I will also hand back your Understanding Sentences Test.

The first portion of the review covers the following material:

  • Part A #1-10
  • Part B #11-20
  • Part C #21-30

Page 399

  • Part D #31-45

Page 400

  • Part G #71-75

You had a great deal of time to work on this in class so you could ask questions as you went along.

Your test is still slated for Thursday.

9-18 Class

Today we discussed run-on sentences. Many of you had trouble with these in the Friendly Letter. We began discussing the material on page 395. Make sure you now know how to repair your run-on sentences. Remember that when two or more sentences are crammed together as one, it is a run-on sentence.

As a class, we covered Part A #1-10. Next, silently, you worked on part B and we graded those in class as well.

For the remainder of the time and for homework:
Part C (at the top of the page)--Rewrite the paragraph making all necessary corrections.
Page 397 CHECK POINT Part A & B--follow directions COMPLETELY.

YOUR TEST IS SLATED FOR THURSDAY of THIS WEEK. Start reviewing each section!

9-15 Class

Today we put aside last night's homework (we will correct and collect it Monday) to look at your Friendly Letters. Everyone had a chance to see their grades and comments I included. Next you had the rest of the class period to journal on your piece. You were to write about what worked well during the writing process and the things you need to work on. If you need to work on things, make sure to not only talk about the problem, but also the ways you are going to SOLVE the problem.

HOMEWORK:
Most people finished this in class, but I did see some take it home for homework. Make sure if you did not turn it in before you left that you definitely have it in on Monday! And have a GREAT weekend!!!!

Today we graded and collected your homework from last night.

In our class discussion afterward we looked at "sentences that begin with THERE" and run-ons and fragmented sentences. I saw quite a few letters that had run-on and fragment issues.

We took notes on pages 392, 394, bottom of 395/top 396. We then tried these: Page 393 #7, 394 #6-8, 396 #11-13

After taking notes and discussing, you had the following exercises:
